Literature & Culture

Hosted by the Westminster Rotary Club

Give the gift of literacy!

While it’s well known that Project Amigo provides scholarships to individual students, did you know we also work with whole schools in fostering a love of learning and promoting strong literacy skills?

You will help to organize, deliver and install mini-libraries in small, under-serviced, rural schools, work alongside kids as they read, engage one-on-one in literacy and art activities, and create memories with them that can last a lifetime.

Afternoons are spent immersing ourselves in the local culture and communities as we explore this hidden corner of Mexico.

Rotary Clubs Create the Magic

Imagine a week where members and friends from different Rotary Clubs are able to collaborate while creating the Magic of Rotary.

With a focus on our students in the village of Suchitlan and their study centre, expect some exciting activities.
Volunteers will be able to use their special talents and skills to interact and help enhance the lives of students.

You will also learn about all aspects of Project Amigo and get a chance to experience aspects of the Mexican Culture.

English Tutoring I

Channel your inner teacher at Project Amigo next winter! Each January we invite a group of our high school and university students to stay with us in Cofradia for a week of English language instruction. You will work one-on-one with a bright and talented Project Amigo scholar supporting them as they learn and develop confidence in their English language abilities. After school, hang out with the students as we explore the local area and get to know more about this beautiful part of Mexico. The course is designed by a professional English as a Second Language teacher and facilitated by Project Amigo approved Leaders.

The English Tutoring week is one of our most popular service experiences and sells out fast. Register for your spot now!

English as a Second Language I & II

This service week offers a rewarding opportunity to make a tangible impact on students’ lives. The goal is to enhance their overall English communication abilities helping with their future academic and professional success. Volunteers are guided by a professional facilitator using fun activities to engage students and make learning enjoyable. An emphasis is placed on speaking practice and pronunciation drills. Volunteers assist with conversation practice, and interactive language games. You learn about all aspects of Project Amigo, and get a chance to experience the authentic Mexican Culture.

Swim Week & Back to School

As we enter the hot days of summer, many of us take advantage of heading to a pool,
lake or beach to cool off. In Suchitlan, students don’t know how to swim, and many
haven’t had the opportunity to participate in lessons.

Project Amigo hosts an annual Swim Week to give students an important life skill and
learning experience.  Volunteers with swimming experience can help teach the fundamentals of swimming to staff and students, how to be safe and able to enjoy their water experiences.

Volunteers will also help prepare for Project Amigo’s annual backpack giveaway,
distributing hundreds of school supplies to incoming students getting them ready for
another school year.

Come and get to know one of the most significant Mexican traditions, where the living ones prepare to receive their dead one and celebrate with them. Learn about the history and meaning of the Day of the Dead, the elements that are part of an altar and the meaning and importance of each one of them; participate with our Scholars in the setting up of a traditional altar to honor those who have passed away; learn how you to cook some of the most traditional dishes during this celebration.

Christmas Fiesta 2019.jpeg

Christmas Fiesta

Be one of Santa’s little helpers this Christmas!

Each year Project Amigo students are invited to an enormous Christmas Fiesta, where each child receives a new outfit, new shoes, a gift, and is a special guest at the biggest, most fantastic Christmas Party ever.

And you’re invited!

Project Amigo organizes the new shoes, clothes, books and toys; wraps gifts, prepares for the party, puts up decorations, stuffs piñatas and will play host alongside Santa.   The Christmas Fiesta is a highlight of the year for Project Amigo kids and this week is ideal for service families.  Your young children or grandchildren will have never seen a Christmas Party like it.

ACCOMMODATION

We believe our service week volunteers deserve comfort, privacy and a good night’s sleep. You will stay in one of Project Amigo’s large, well-equipped and well-appointed homes in the delightfully friendly, welcoming and altogether completely Mexican village of Cofradia de Suchitlan. Project Amigo’s properties are maintained to an excellent standard of cleanliness and safety.  Navigating the village requires care as there are steps into and out of stores and homes, cobble-stoned streets and uneven sidewalks. Please be sure to contact us with any questions or concerns about accessibility at Project Amigo.
